Why UAE

The destination most Indian families haven't considered — but should

There is a version of the study abroad decision that most Indian families have not thought through properly. The US, UK, Canada, and Australia dominate the conversation — but each of those countries is either tightening its immigration rules, raising its costs, or reducing its post-study work rights. The UAE has been doing the opposite. In 2024–25, the number of Indian students choosing the UAE jumped by 67%. Over 1.85 lakh Indian students are now studying there. The reasons are straightforward once you look at them clearly.

The most obvious one is proximity. A flight from Mumbai or Delhi to Dubai takes three to four hours. Your family can visit for a long weekend. If something happens at home, you can be back the same day. No other serious study destination — not the UK, not Germany, not Australia — comes close on this. For Indian families where the emotional weight of sending a child abroad is real, this changes the calculation entirely.

Then there is the tax question. The UAE has zero personal income tax. A student earning AED 5,000 per month from a part-time job keeps every dirham of it. A graduate earning AED 12,000 per month in their first job takes home the same. In the UK, Australia, or Canada, 20–30% of that would go to the government. Over a career, this compounds significantly. The UAE is also home to 4.36 million Indians — the largest expat community in the country, making up roughly 30% of the total population. In Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Hindi, Gujarati, Malayalam, and Tamil are heard everywhere. The adjustment period that can define the first semester abroad for students going to the UK or Australia barely exists here.

What the India–UAE Mobility Pact (January 2026) changes: A landmark agreement between the two governments introduced 48-hour fast-track student visa processing for Indian applicants, mutual recognition of academic credits, and new sandwich degree formats that allow students to split their course between an Indian institution and a UAE university. It is the most significant policy shift between the two countries on education in a decade.
